How to Replace a Brake Light

Vehicle Brake Lights

When you drive though Eatontown, every time you touch your brake pedal you’re signaling your intentions to stop or slow down to other drivers. This is critical to keeping yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road safe. If you have a brake light out on your car, it’s important to get it replaced soon. You can either schedule a service appointment at your local Freehold-area service center or learn how to change a brake light at your home. Follow along with Galaxy Toyota as we discuss how to replace a brake light at your home so you can drive safely on your daily commute or while you’re running errands.

How to Change a Brake Light at Home

How you change your brake light will depend on what kind of Toyota vehicle you have. Your Toyota owner’s manual will tell you what kind of bulb you need and what tools you will need to access the housing. Follow the instructions below to learn how to change a brake light:

  • Buy the Correct Bulbs: Read your owner’s manual to find out what kind of bulb you need for your Toyota model, then visit our parts department or go to a Toms River auto store to purchase them.
  • Remove Tail Light Housing: With the replacement bulb on hand, use a Philips screw driver (or the tool specified in your owner’s manual) to remove the colored lens. You can access the lens from the inside of your trunk. You may need to pull back some fabric to access the screws.
  • Replace the Brake-Light Bulb: Remove the old bulb from its socket and get the new bulb out of its packaging. Before you install the new brake-light, apply some dielectric grease to the end. This will prevent corrosion and rust from forming on the connection, protecting your brake light components.
  • Replace The Housing: With the new bulb in place, gently fit everything back together. Reattach the taillight housing and replace any removed fabric.

Pro Tip: If you’re replacing one brake light, take the extra time to replace the other light too, even if it’s not burnt out. This way you won’t be stopping again a week later to change the other bulb.

Why Do You Need to Replace Your Brake Lights?

Your taillights help you signal to other drivers on your Long Branch errands. Whether you’re preparing to make a turn, coming to a stop, or slowing down for traffic, your lights illuminate to warn other drivers that you’re slowing down. If your lights aren’t functioning as they should, drivers will have no way of knowing what you’re going to do next. Avoid potential collisions and a fix-it ticket by replacing your brake lights after they burn out.

Schedule Brake Light Service at Galaxy Toyota

Make a plan to check your brake lights when you check your oil levels and tire tread depth each month. Have a family member or friend stand behind your vehicle when it’s in part and as you step on your brake pedal. This way they can tell you if a light is out. It’s also a good idea to check your rear turn signals too.
